Here's a retrospective look at a 2002 mission into the St Marys park tunnel. This old freight tunnel is located on the former CSX Port Morris Branch. At the time of this mission, these tracks were unused but not yet officially abandoned.
At the time the rails were still in place, and the tunnel was not too severely flooded. It served as a home to the homeless and a pit stop for migratory birds.
Deep in the tunnel we came across a Yellow Crowned Night Heron. These birds tend to dwell in caves. With very few such locations around the NYC area, this old freight tunnel was for a time a good layover spot for such migratory birds.
